Every winter we invariably see a lot of our Patients who have had to go on Antibiotics, for one reason or another.

Many Alternative Healthcare Doctors are vehemently opposed to the use of antibiotics. The reality is that they have their place. We don’t believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We do, however, believe in rebalancing the body after a drug was been administered.

Anti-biotic literally means Anti-life. Antibiotics are great at killing the bugs that make us sick. The problem is that they kill ALL the bugs in our body…even the good ones that help keep us healthy. What I’m talking about is the beneficial bacteria in our gut.

You see, when you were born, you came into this world a squeaky clean, relatively sterile little critter. Within about four to six weeks, however, you were teaming with bacteria all over and inside of you.

Think of your little body as a corral reef. A corral reef has a bunch of animals and anemones that are residence of the reef. The reef also attracts animals that come in to feed, mate, and hide on a daily basis. So does your gut. Your gut has to maintain an optimal balance of residential and transient bacteria in order for you to maintain optimal health. These bacteria have evolved over time to have a symbiotic relationship with you. You provide them with a place to live and a food source and they help protect you from foreign invaders.

People used to get the right bacteria for a healthy gut from their food. They either picked a fruit off a tree and ate it, pulled something out of the ground and rubbed the dirt off and ate it or fermented foods to make them last longer and ate it. All of these methods replenish the “good” bacteria in the gut. With the sterilization, irradiation, preservation, and chemicalization of our modern foods, people no longer get these beneficial bacteria.

Problems arise when you have worn yourself down so much, or not been able to keep the right balance of good bacteria, that the foreign bacteria are able to take hold and multiply. If the wrong invaders take over, you need antibiotics. The antibiotic then goes in and does what Napalm does…it wipes EVERYTHING out. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Have you read how the drug companies have not been able to keep up with the Superbugs? As the antibiotics have been wiping out the bacteria, the bacteria have been adapting and becoming resistant to the drugs. As the drugs have gotten stronger, so have the bugs. It’s like a scary Sci-Fi movie…only it’s real! (Ever hear, “the meek shall inherit the earth”? This may be what they meant.)

PROBIOTICS TO THE RESUE!

If Anti-biotic means Anti-life, what do you suppose Pro-biotic means?

You got it…Pro-life! The little bugs that should be colonizing your gut are the ones that may actually save the human race. (That’s not an exaggeration. Research is showing that the Appendix may be the reservoir good bacteria that come out to recolonize the gut after an invasion. No wonder people who have had their Appendix removed tend to have “gut issues” later in life. Scientist are also speculating that the cause of Appendicitis may be from bad bacteria invading the Appendix because not enough of the good guys were there to defend it.)

Many Dr’s now believe that we could have averted the situation we are now in with the super bugs if physicians had simply added a course of Probiotics after the regimen of antibiotics.

Ah well, it is what it is, eh?

The good news is that you can still do that and substantially boost your body’s ability to fight off foreign invaders and the need for further antibiotic therapy.

The two specific products we recommend are Dr. O’Hirras Probiotics Plus and Latero-Flora.

Here is the Post Antibiotic Protocol:

Dr. O’Hirras:

This is the best full spectrum probiotic on the market. It is also one of the most expensive at about a dollar a pill. However, you get every bit of what you pay for. Each batch is cultured for five years in a lab at the base of Mt. Fuji, Japan. The windows to the lab a re open all year round so the bacteria have a very broad range of temperature tolerance. They are also extremely resistant to Ph levels, which is essential for surviving the stomach acids.

For the first week after the course of antibiotics take five capsules in the morning and five capsules at night. It is best to take these about an hour prior to a meal or two hours after. We suggest taking the morning dose just as you wake up and then waiting an hour before eating breakfast. Take the evening does just as you go to bed.

For the next six weeks, take two in the morning and two at night. After that we recommend one to two a day for at least three months.

One a day is a good way to maintain your gut health thereafter. Remember, we do not get exposed to enough of the proper amount of good bacteria in our modern environment. The healthier your gut flora is, the stronger your immune system is.

Latero-Flora:

We ad this product if you have had multiple courses of antibiotics in the past two years. Latero-flora specifically targets Candida yeast. Candida is yeast that lives in small quantities as part of the normal flora of your gut. It will very quickly change to a fungal form after a course of antibiotics if the proper ratio of all the good bacteria is not introduced into the gut. Once it becomes a fungus, it proliferates and can become systemic through out your body. Systemic Candida infection is an underlying hidden cause behind many conditions from migraines and depression to skin problems and weight gain.

The proper re-seeding dosage is as follows;
The first three days: Ten in the morning and ten at night. Again, separate the doses from meals.

The next two weeks: Two in the morning and two at night.

The next three days: Ten in the morning and ten at night.

The second two weeks: Two in the morning and two at night.

This cycle may have to be repeated two to four more times in severe cases.
Thereafter, we suggest 1-2 a day. This will keep the Candida yeast in check and maintain proper balance in your gut. Your gut is a living eco system where “competitive inhibition” is the rule. That means, in order to maintain proper balance, certain bugs can not reproduce at a faster rate than others and over populate the eco system. The way to control the balance is with continuous re-inoculation of the good bacteria and controlling the food source to the potentially bad critters, such as Candida. Candida yeast thrives on sugar and simple carbohydrates. Cut our the white stuff from your diet, (i.e., sugar breads, pasta rice and some beans) and you will keep the Candida in check.
